Syncing repeating Google Calendar events

Cucumbar also syncs repeating (or recurring) events from Google Calendar. Like with standard non repeating Google events you can make edits or deletions in Cucumbar to individual events, and those changes will synchronise back to your Google calendar.

  • When you edit or delete a repeating event in Cucumbar, it applies only to that specific event, not the entire series.
  • On the first sync, all repeating event instances are grouped together.
  • Cucumbar limits the number of cached repeating events to 25. See below for more details.
  • Each event is automatically assigned a zoom level (link) based on its repeat frequency. If an event repeats weekly or monthly, the zoom level is three months. For less frequent repeats, the zoom level reflects the frequency. For example, if an event repeats annually, the zoom level is one year.

Infinite repeating events

In Google Calendar, if you set up a repeating event to be daily, weekly, or even monthly without an end date or a limit on occurrences, it will repeat indefinitely. This isn't ideal when using a calendar app like Cucumbar, which allows you to view events years into the future. For instance, a daily event viewed five years in the future would result in 1,825 events. To maintain a tidy calendar, it's advisable to set end dates on repeating events. The end of a school term, financial year, or calendar year can be good times to reassess.

Repeating event settings

To manage how many repeating events are displayed and prevent timeline clutter, you can set a limit on the number of instances visible. You can customise the number of instances shown in your calendar settings. The default is set to 1, with a maximum of 25. A value of 0 will display no repeating events.

These settings can be individually configured for each calendar.

Filter repeating events

We’ve have introduced a repeating event filter under the filter menu. Clicking on this filter will show only repeating events. Clicking the filter again will toggle the view to show events that are not repeating.

Deleting events

Deleting an individual repeating event instance in Cucumbar frees up a slot within the 25-instance cache limit, allowing a subsequent event from the series to be cached. To ensure future occurrences are visible, consider deleting older, individual repeating event instances to free up space.

When you delete an item in Cucumbar, it only deletes that specific event and not all occurrences in the series. A neat trick to delete a large number of events at once is to search for the event, then in list view, select all and use the bulk delete option.
